MR TEMPEST ANDERSON. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 30. (Received Aug. 31,, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Tempest Anderson died of enteric fever while passing through the Suez (Janal on his homeward journey from the Philippines. [Mr Tempest Anderson, M.D., B.Sc. Loud., J.P., F.G.S., I«'.L.S„ F.R.G.S., Hon. D.Sc. Leeds; consulting ophthalmic surgeon, York County Hospital; U'cl.ow oi University College, London; member of oouncil and late vice-president of the British Association, member of council Geological and Royal Geographical Societies, etc., etc., was born of an old Yorkshire family in 184b. He had a very distinguished career at tlie London University. Ho became TindaU Lccturer on volcanoes at the Royal Institution and, interested himself In many pursuits. He was an ardent mountaineer rand a great photographer of, volcanoes and mountains, 1 which he made a special &tudy. Among his publications are several papers on ophthalmological eubjecis and " Volcanic Studies." Ho was joint author of a report to the Royal Society on West Indian Eruptions, 1902 and 1907.]

MR ALFRED . HIRST. . LONDON, August 30. (Received Aug, 31, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Alfred Hirst, the blind philanthropist and wool expert, is dead.

EX-JUDGE WARD. Tho death took place at his residence, "The Rest," Maori Hill, on Saturday of ex-Judge Charles Dudley Robert Ward, at the ago of 86 years. Ex-Judge Wajd was the oldest son of Sir Henry George Ward, G.C.M.G., of Gilston Park, Herts, who dipd in 1860 as. Governor of Madras. Ex-Judgo Ward was educated at Rugby and at Wadham College, Oxford. After studying law at tho Inner' Temple he was called to the Bar in 1853. He arrived in New. Zealand on September 20 in the following year. He was "returned to the House of Representatives for the Wellington County district in 1855, and on June 1, 1857, ho was appointed chairman of the Courts of Sessions and the Peace for the province of Wellington and presiding judge of tho Magistrates' Courts for Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa, and Wanganui. On Janpry 1, 1864, ho was appointed resident magistrate at Wellington, and two years later hp was made district iudpe of Wanganui, Marlborough, and Hawko's Bay. In September, 1867, he was appointed acting Supreme Court judge in Dunedin, and in 1869 he was appointed district judge for Wcstland, Southland, and Otago. ' Subsequently ho wa3 acting Supremo Court judge at Auckland in September, 1886; at Christchurch in September, 1887; and at Dunedin in March, 1894. He declined a per manent appointment on the Supreme Court Bench in June, 189&, and an acting Supremo Court judgeship in the following year. For somo years the deceased was chairman of the South Island Railway Appeal Board. Ho married in 1851, but had no children.
