THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROVINCE.

» TotMobbow Marlborough will count forty-one years of provincial history. It was on November the Ist, 1859, that effeot was given to the deoree of separation from Nelson and what was a district was converted into a province. That is the meaning of the anniversary to be celebrated tomorrow* That the forty-one years has. been a period of progress, slow at times bat always sure, could easily be proved. It is hardly necessary to insist on the fact that that progress has been of a tery material character within recent years, the history of which has been marked by the closer settlement of land on a solid basis, and a steady prosecution of public works. This advance is well worth reoording m connection with a referenoe to the anniversary of the province, if only for the sake of emphasising the merit of provincial and locil ambition and energy. The well beiag of a community depends largely on the the amount cf civic spirit that animates it, but the worth of the good and useful work done by those public spirited residents who give their time and ability to the common weal is too of:en forgotten. Marlborough is not now without many residents of this stamp, who have worthy aims m view, such as the building of the main trunk railway through the prcvince. Doubtless on the occasion of the Jubilee, nine years hence, many excellent projects will have been successfully accomplished, and Marl* borough will have a good record for its half century as a province,
