The late Mr. Jenkinson was born at Dunedin in 1858, a son.of John Hartley Jenkinson, Dunedin's. . firs.t wharfinger. After, serving his,, time as a boilermaker, he, soon became, a leading figure in the trade union movement. Those who can remember the Octagon fire of 1880 at Dur.edin, when 13 lives were lost, will recall that Mr. Jenkinson, with his friend, Mr.-Peter Grant, a former inspector of machinery, was responsible for saving .: three lives. As president of . the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, Mr. Jenkinson played a part-in the strike of 1890, using his influence towards a peaceful'settlement. He was one of the four Labour members of the famous "twelve apostles" appointed by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon) to the Legislative' Council in 1891. The other Labour members were Messrs. Bolt, Jennings, and John Rigg. With the coming of the Massey .Government, Mr. Jenkinson left the Upper House after serving for "three full terms; In 1914 he -*as an unsuccessful Liberal candidate for the.Clut.na j seat.

The late Mr. Jenkinson took a keen interest in the early history .'of Now Zealand.' He Wf>< for many. years president of the 'Wellington branch of the Early' Settlers' and Historical Association. He resided at Feilding for some years, but returned to Wellington about three years ago. He is survived by his widow and one son, Mr. Edgar Jenkinson, of the Public Works Department, Gisborne. Another son, Mr, Horace Jenkinson, was killed in action in France.
