The election of four Maori members of the House of Representatives yesterday resulted in the return of two supporters of the GovernmentMr. Tan Henare (Northern) and the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata (Eastern) —and two members of the Ratana Part) —Mr. E. T. Tirikateue (Southern) and Mr. H. T. Ratana (Western). The Government thus suffered a reverse, Mr. Taite Te Tomo, who sat in the last Parlia- j ment as a supporter of the Government, losing the Western Maori seat by the narrow margin of 47 votes. In the last ' Parliament the sole representative of the Ralana Party was Mr. Tirikatene, who consistently voted with the Labour Party. It is anticipated that Mr. {Ratana, who is a son of the Maori • "prophet." and is a farmer near Tura- ! kina, will follow a similar course. | The preparations made by Mr. G. G. i Hodgkins, She Chief Electoral Officer, ! and his staff for the handling of the returns worked very smoothly, and the only delay occurred in Western Maori, •where the closeness of the voting made careful checking essential.
