GOVERNMENT REVERSE
ME. TE TO3IO BEATEN
The election of four Maori members of the House of Representatives yesterday resulted in the return of two supporters of the GovernmentMr. Tan Henare (Northern) and the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata (Eastern) —and two members of the Ratana Part) —Mr. E. T. Tirikateue (Southern) and Mr. H. T. Ratana (Western). The Government thus suffered a reverse, Mr. Taite Te Tomo, who sat in the last Parlia- j ment as a supporter of the Government, losing the Western Maori seat by the narrow margin of 47 votes. The results of. the elections are as follows:— NORTHERN MAORI. T. Henare (Nationalist) 2983 P. K.Paikea (Ratana) 2202 L. W. Parore (Democrat) 297 D. W. Taylor (Independent) .. 231 H. W.. Majority ! for Makitanara, 19.] j [By-election, August 3, 1932, vac- ; ancy caused by death of Mr. T. Makijtanara.—E. T. Tirikatene (I.Ra.), 425; |W. Te Ihoka Parata (C), 184; P. Mac- | Donald (I.), 132; J. Ben ton (1.C.), 113; jT. K. Bragg (I.Ref.), 94; W. Mihaka (1.c.), 3. Majority for Tirikatene, 241.) There was a large increase in the \ number of votes recorded as comparj o.d with the General Election in 1931. 1 The figures are as follows, the figures for 1931 being given in parentheses:— Northern, 6487 (5630); Eastern, 8554 (7U99): Western, 8589 (7793); Southern, 966 (917). j Interest attaches to the return of Mr. j 'Ratana for Western Maori. In the last ' Parliament the sole representative of the Ralana Party was Mr. Tirikatene, who consistently voted with the Labour Party. It is anticipated that Mr. {Ratana, who is a son of the Maori • "prophet." and is a farmer near Tura- ! kina, will follow a similar course. | The preparations made by Mr. G. G. i Hodgkins, She Chief Electoral Officer, ! and his staff for the handling of the returns worked very smoothly, and the only delay occurred in Western Maori, •where the closeness of the voting made careful checking essential.
