THEEE APPOINTMENTS
A WELLINGTON BARRISTER
The- Prime Minister and AttorneyGeneral (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) today announced the appointment as King's Counsel of Mr. A. H. Johnstone, Auckland. Mr. J. B. Callan, Dunedin. Mr. C. H. Weston, Wellington. They are to be sworn In at the Supremo Court on Monday morning. Mr. Johnstone is a well-known barrister of Auckland. He was born in Milton, Otago, and was educated at Tokomairiro District High School and Victoria University College. He took his B.A. degree in 1905 and graduated as a Bachelor of Laws two years later. He practised or several years in New
Plymouth, and was for some time president of the Taranaki District Law Society. He was also a member of the Now Plymouth Borough Council and of the High School Board. Later he-re-moved to Auckland. Mr. Johnstone at the present time holds, the office of president of the Auckland District Law Society, and is a member of the Council of Legal Education. Air. Callan recently severed' his connection with the firm of Callan and Galloway, Dunedin, in order to commence practice in Wellington. He was born in Dunedin in 1882, and was educated at the Christian Brothers' School and at the Otago University. He took his B.A. and LL.B. degrees in 1906, and in the following year became a partner in the firm of Callan and Galloway on the retirement of his
father. He has held the .position of Dean of the Faculty of Law of Otago University,' where he was lecturer in Torts. He is a member of the Council of Legal Education, and was formerly president of the Otago District Law Society and the Otago Amateur Athletic Association. He served in the N.Z.E.F. as a captain of the 3rd Battalion of th^e New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and has held the position of vicepresident of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers' Association. Mr. Weston was born in Hokitika in 1879, and was educated at Christ's College and Canterbury University College, where he graduated as a Bachelor of Laws in 1903. He commenced the practice of his profession in 1902 at New Plj-mouth,' and. succeeded his father as Crown Prosecutor in 1915, holding the position continuously until 1931, with the exception of a period
when he was away on active service in command of the Second Wellington Battalion. In 1931 he transferred to Auckland, and at the end of last year set. up practice in Wellington. Ho was c-hairman of the New Plymouth Repatriation Committee. Ho is the author of "Three Years with the New Zealandersy and "Workmen's and Contractors'' Liens."
