Tho death occurred in Dunedin yesterday of Mr. John Bartholomew Callan, sen., one of the oldest legal practitioners of that city Mr. Bert Royle, N.Z. representative for Messrs. J. C. Williamson and J. and N. Tait, has returned to ■Wellington from a visit South. A Press Association message from Sydney states that the Marama's passengers to Auckland include Sir John and Lady Bell, of Calcutta, Major-Gene-ral and Mrs. Sloan, and Dr. and Mrs. H. S. Kenriclc. The Chief Inspector of Fisheries (Mr. A. E. Hefford) returned to Wellington to-day from Westland. He will leave shortly for Wanganui, in connection with the work thijre upon Atlantic salmon, and will also inspect the site for a proposed hatchery to suit three Taranaki acclimatisation societies about to amalgamate. Mr. E. E. Herron, general manager of the Milk Department of the City Council, has advised Councillor W. H. Bennett, chairman of the Milk Committee, by wireless, that he expects to arrive at Auckland on Monday. Mr. Herron has made a very comprehensive tour of the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, gathering information as to the latest methods of milk- treatment, factory and depot lay-out, and management, etc., that he may base his recommendations as to methods to be followed in tho establishment of the new Wellington milk station upon the latest and best practice. A United Press Association cablegram from Sydney states that LieutenantColonel Lascelles, Commandant of the Army School of Education, Belguam, ■India, has arrived there, en route for New Zealand, where he was born. Lieutfenant-Colonel Lascelles was aide do camp to Lord Kitchener in 1911 when the latter was Commander-in-Chief of the Coronation troops. Mrs. Laseelles accompanies Lieutenant-Col-onel Lascelles.
