Major John Whitney, of Auckland, ■who has been in Great Britain for two years, returned to Wellington by the R.M.S.- Corinthic this afternoon. Major Whitney was accompanied by Miss Whitney.

Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, who has been ill for about a fortnight as the result of a nervous breakdown, is improving in health, but is not expected to be able to return to business for some weeks. He proposes to take a holiday journey before resuming work.

Mr. Henry Brown, a well-known Taranaki settler, died at Inglewood on Thursday last in his 79th year. Educated in Germany and Switzerland, he accompanied his parents to .Taranaki in 1859. He served during the Maori War, taking part ■in several engagements, including Waireka, and attained commis. sioned rank. Ho took an active part in local politics, and iri 1896 was induced to contest the Taranaki seat in tho Housa of Representatives. He succeeded in defeating the sitting member", Mr. E. M. Smith, but at the next election Mi 1. Smith turned th« tables on him. For many years Mr. Brown was head of a large sawmilling firm."
