THE election for the vacancy in the electoial diitrict of <'ity AVest, causod by the retirement of Sir Geoige Grey, took place yesteiday. Tlio poll opened at H o'clock, and closed ;it 4. During the day a considerable amount of activity was manifested, tie committees of Mr. Tonks anil Mr, Famall working veiy li.nd. From the veiy hrst theie was no doubt entcitained .IB to the lesult of the election, except by those supporting tho candidature of Mi. Farnall, who entertained the opinion that if their candid.ito was not at the top of tho poll at 4 o'clock, ho would be very neai it. Hoiely were they disappointed when about half past 4 o'clock the reanlt of the poll was made known, which showed him to be ho f.ir behind Mr. Tonks. Cabs and vehicle* of various kinds woio plentifully supplied by tho committees of Mesiri. Tonks and Farnall, and a largor number weie polled than was anticipated. Out of «ome 1,300 on the roll foi City West, 707 yesteiday recorded then votes foi one oi other of the candidates. At 4 o'clock tho poll was closed, and during tho time th.it the votes woio baing counted a considoiablc amount of "oh. tit" was indulged in. Mr. George Staines came in for a. good ihaie of the banter. Mr. Scuats announced that Mr. Stainei had piopoicd a T»te of thanks to Sir Julius Vogel, which met with three hemty and piolonged groans.
