ARRIVAL OF HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR.

His Excellency the Governor arrived at the Christchurch* Railway Station last evening, about eight o'clock, from the Selwn, by special train.

His Honor the Superintendent, Colonel Packe. and Major Wilson, proceeded by special train from Christchurch to the Selwyn. to receive his Excellency on his arrival here.

At the Christchurch station preparations had been made to receive his Excellency with all due honor, considering the lateness of the hour at which he arrived, although there is no'doubt but that had his Excellency arrived in daylight, a much better reception would have been organised.

No. 6 Company C.R.V. numbering some thirty-six men. under Lieut. Wolfe aud Ensign Black, paraded shortly after six p.m., and formed a guard of honor on the platform, and Mr Hesketh had a small battery of two guns in position ou the road near the goods shed, from which a salute was fired on the arrival of the train.

On the platform were the City Council, headed by his Worship the Mayor and a few other gentlemen. The arrangements of Mr Jones, the station master, were very complete, he having taken the precaution to clear the platform of the public, and thus avoided any of the crowding which usually takes place on these occasions. The Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, under Lieut. Strouts, were in attendance, to form an escort for his Excellency, and Mr Inspoctor Pender and a small detachment of police were also on the ground. The special train, which was driven by Mr A. Beverley, and which was in charge of Mr Marshmau, the Manager of Railways, left the Selwyn Station at 7.20 p.m., reaching the Christchurch Statiou shortly after 8 p.m. On arriving at the platform, his Excellency, who was accompanied by his Honor the Superintendent, Colonel Packe, Major Wilson, C.8., Judge Ward, Mr J. Studholme, and other gentlemen, and attended by Captain Pitt, R.A., A.D.C., and Lieut. Giraud, and looked remarkably well, was received with a salute from Mr Hesketh's battery, and the guard presented arms, loud cheers beiug given by those assembled. His Worship the Mayor then stepped forward, -Mdfl f mf pressing the satisfaction felt by the citizens at his safe arrival amongst them. His Excellency expressed his gratification at again visiting Christchurch, and his regret that his arrival had taken place at so late an hour. His Excellency was then introduced to the Councillors present, and proceeded to Major Wilson's carriage. His Excellency, accompanied by the gentlem<"n above-named in two carriages, and escorted by the Cavalry, drove to the Club, where a guard of honor from the Christchurch Artillery under Captain Bird and Lieutenants Craig and Stansell, received him with presented arms. We understand that as yet no formal programme of his Excellency's movements during the next week has yet been arranged.
