POLLING TO-DAY
DUNEDIN NORTH SEAT There are only two candidates in the by-election which is being held in the Dunedin North electorate today to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. J. W. Munro (Labour). They are Mr. Norman Hastings Jones (National), a student, aged 23, who has served in the present war, and Mr. Robert Walls (Labour), a company director. Mr. Munro was first elected to the seat in 1922. He lost it in 1925 but regained it at the next election. In 1938 he secured a majority of 3557 votes.
Voting at the general election in 1943 was as follows: J. W. Munro (Labour), 8038; A. L. Cassie (National), 5240; F. A. Keane (People's Movement), 858; C. M. Ross (Democratic Labour), 263. The number of electors on the roll in 1943 was 15,691.
