THE HON T. H. BARTLEY.

' We hav<3 to chronicle the death of the Hon. T. H. hartley, -who died at his residence, Stokes' Point, on Christmas Day, in the Sl.^ year of his age. Mr Bartley, although hd wore his laurels meekly, has done good work in the colony, and filled important offices in the legislature of New Zealand. Mr Bartley wasanold colonist, and came from Sydney to the Bay of Islands so long ago as 1839, and in 1841, he came to Auckland in the same ship in which Messrs Pollen, Whitaker, Dilworth, and one or two others still living, sought the site of the capital city. Mr Bartley commenced to practise as a solicitor in Auckland, and in which profession he continued many years, to his credit and personal advantage. In the first Parliament of 1854, the name of Mr Bartley was prominent, and he was nominated to the Legislative Council for the purpose of'representing the Ministry as one of the Governor's responsible advisers. He proved himself one of the ablest, and consequently one of the most conspicuous members or _ the Legislative Council, aud was appointed speaker to the House. His line of policy Avas conciliatory, aud by it he won the esteem of the acting governor and the more prominent of his co-workers. The political and official career of the Hon. Mr Bartley seems to have been of honourable exertion to its close when he retired, o\vin« to advancing years, to his quiet home ai btokes Point, upon an annual pension of £300. The biographer of deceased will find the interesting facts of Mr Bartley's public life, in Thomson's " Story of New Zealand. His remains were buried yesterday afternoon in the quiet burial ground of St.' Stephen's Parnell, and the funeral was attended only by his old friends and contemporaries.
