Apirana Ngata's Discussion of Treaty of Waitangi With this copy of Te Ao Hou you will find a special free supplementary booklet: the re-print of an article, The Treaty of Waitangi, written by the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata and first published in 1922. At the time when he wrote this article, the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi was a frequently discussed topic among Maori people, and there were many different opinions as to the meaning of the different sections in it. This is still a subject which is often discussed, so his article is as relevant today as it has ever been. Sir Apirana was trained as a lawyer, and had a brilliantly lucid understanding of legal and parliamentary technicalities. His analysis of the Treaty, article by article, is so clearly and simply written that even young people will be able to understand it, in spite of the complexity of the subject-matter. Sir Apirana's original article was in Maori. Quite apart from the interest of its subject, it is so well and eloquently written that it will be of considerable value as a text to people who are learning Maori. We publish as well an English translation by Mr M. R. Jones, and this will be of special assistance to students.
