- Gun Flash
Gun Flash was the weekly typewritten camp magazine of the 33rd Heavy Regiment of the Third Division, New Zealand Expeditionary Force the Pacific (NZEF IP) in 1943 during World War II.
First published in January 1943 from regimental headquarters in Ile Nou, New Caledonia, it featured regular ‘Who’s Zoo’ and ‘Miss-Fires’ columns, gossip, jokes, cartoons and sporting results.
On 17 July 1943 the regiment published that it was ‘on the move again’ (17 July 1943: 1) and was to become a training depot. While it was the intention to publish an issue as usual despite the changes, it was stated that ‘it may be difficult to obtain sufficient material to fill the paper’ (17 July 1943: 1).
On 26 July the 33rd Heavy Regiment was disbanded, and personnel were absorbed into the newly formed Artillery Training Depot (ATD). Given this, Gun Flash may have been replaced by the ATD’s own magazine The Arty AnTiDote.
