Flak was the printed fortnightly camp magazine of the Auckland Anti-Aircraft (AA) units. It was published by the 22nd Light Anti-Aircraft unit in 1943 from Epsom, Auckland, during World War II and printed by the Auckland Service Printery.
Edited by Bombardier H R L Blanks, Flak began as ‘the Gunner’s own magazine’ (1 April 1943: 2) in March 1943. According to its second issue, Flak was developed for ‘entertainment and interest’ (1 April 1943: 2) and belonged to the men of the regiment.
Containing articles, camp and sporting news, cartoons, jokes, poems, photographs, and advertisements, by issue four Flak had grown its circulation to include the 15th Heavy and 67th Searchlight Regiments. Flak also published a special issue covering the 26th Company Anti-Aircraft Regiment from Dunedin.
After only three months Flak published its eighth and final issue on 25 June 1943, reluctantly making the decision to stop publishing ‘in the view of drastic cuts in the personnel of the AA units commonsense is the deciding factor’ (25 June 1943: 1).
