The Arty AnTiDote was a weekly typewritten camp magazine published by the Artillery Training Depot (ATD) in New Caledonia, 1943, during World War II.
The ATD unit was formed after some units of the Third Division, New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Pacific (NZEF IP), were disbanded. This included the 33rd Heavy Regiment and 28th Heavy Anti-aircraft (AA) units.
Stated as the ‘illegitimate brainchild of ‘Troppo’ and ‘printed and published at ATD by the Mosquito Creek Publishing Corporation Unlimited’ (30 October 1943: 6) the Arty AnTiDote was ‘the source of much amusement and interest to members of the depot’ (Evans: 255). Compiled from camp contributions, The Arty AnTiDote featured sketches, poems, jokes, news, sporting results and event notices surrounded by hand drawn cartoons. Each week a page was devoted to the history of New Caledonia.
While it is not known when the Arty AnTiDote finished, the Artillery Training Depot was disbanded in April 1944.
