DESPERATE MEASURES.
In his announcement on a Sunday morning the vicar regretted that money was not coming in fast enoughbut he was no pessimist. “We have tried,” he said, “to raise the necessary money in the usual manner. We have tried honestly. Now we are going to see what a bazaar can do.”

A man reported that he had seen a very suspicious looking character hastily drop a package at the side entrance of the Baptist Temple and drive away hurriedly. The package, addressed to Dr. Daniel A. Poling, prominent church official, was cautionusly soaked in a bucket of oil. , k. Lieutenant Granitz, of the police bomb squad, then gingerly opened it up to find—a batch of Dr. Poling’s sermons which the printer had just delivered. * * *
“Your vacation doesn’t seem to worry you.” “No, my boss tells me when, and my wife where.”
The captain watched from his boat the landing of the minister of the island. He saw the cannibals rush from their hiding places and grab him and disappear into the bushes. Three years later, the captain passed tfie island and much to his astonishment saw capping the top of a hill, a white church. He landed and was , greeted by the minister. “Why I thought, they made broth of you three years ago,” said the captain. “No,” said the minister, “when they took me into the bushes I cut a slice off my leg and gave it to the chief and his wife, who found it to be anything but a tempting morsel. They in turn gave it to one man who gave it to another, until my leg went all over that tribe. But,” added the minister, “I’ll tell you something I did not tell the cannibals.” “What?” said the captain. “I gave them a slice of my wooden leg.” ❖ * *
