HE GOT A LAUGH
Dave had just come over on the last transport and everything was new to him. We were seated in the tent when suddenly a harsh, braying noise shattered the peace and caused Dave to jump nearly out of his skin. “Whatever on earth’s that?” he asked. “Oh, that’s nothing—only a jackass,” we told him. “A jackass be damned,” snorted Dave. “Do you think I’ve lived among thousands of them all my life without getting to know their ruddy laughter)? You can’t take a rise out of me.”
