RESOURCE AND BEER
We were doing our guard one night in a camp in England. The guard tent was situated on a rise overlooking the camp. “Bluey,” one of the sentries, had just come off duty and informed us there was an 18-gallon in the canteen just asking to be pinched. \ In a matter of minutes the barrel was in the tent and the absence of a tap was settled by a bullet being fired through the keg. The mob were making merry when the canteen ‘bloke” was heard coming up the hill and yelling to the corporal that his beer had “gone off.” ■ “Bluey” grabbed the keg and set it rolling down the opposite side of the hill and ran after it. ' The silence was shattered about 30 sec. afterwards by: “Halt! Who goes there?” and a shot rang out in the still night air. All eyes were turned towards the sound and soon “Bluey” came into view rolling the missing keg in front of him. “I got the beer O.K. mate” he said. “Some of those thieving Tommies were getting away with it. Most of the beer is saved, but I hit her with the bullet I let go.” Canteen cove was so pleased .he brought up a dozen chocolates to share among the mob. Anyone say the New Digger has no resource?
