“Smacker” and I were billeted ... on Mme. Deloitte at Cesquares, France, before we went up into, the line, and it was a delighted old lady who welcomed us back after * six months in the forward area. But this time we were laden like camels, and Madame led us into the back bedroom , to dump our cargo of tin helmets, packs, web equipment, gas respirators, rifles, and whatnot. Then a worried look came into her eyes, “Ah, mon Dieu” she cried, “are you sure . you came by all those things,honestly?” * * . . i * h Uncle Sam’s nippin’ Nippon.
