MOUSTACHE CULTURE
During three months in the Libyan desert it was often a matter of a week or so between shaves, so what more natural than 99 out of a hundred should start growing moustaches. Types varied from the anaemic sort that grew for a month before being visible, up to the handle-bar type of 40 years ago. Proud was the man who had one of that sort. Competition was keen about the curling part and many were the substances used to make them stick out as far as the ears. Vaseline, too soft; soap, an improvement; pomades; quite good* but too expensive. At last somebody discovered the ideal, 100 per cent, efficient, ’ easy to apply, one application lasts all day, and provided “bucksheesh” by the Army in large quantities; It is now universally used, i.e., the anti-dimming preparation used for respirators (or gas masks), w ** . *
