SPORTS SECTION.

SPORTING PERSONALITIES.

We are proud to present to you some of the sportsmen that we have aboard our transport and although most of them were very reticent in giving us the'information that we required, they were .eventually; persuaded under the threat of being thrown overboard. * * *

Lt. J. M. Watt, N.Z.M.C., has figured very prominently in both Athletics and Rugby. He represented Wellington College in the

Ist fifteen besides being Senior champion in all running events, was Wellington provincial champion in the 440 and 2nd in the N.Z. champs, twice running. Achieved the acme of all footballers ambitions by making the All Blacks against the Australians in 1936. Ran at the N.Z. Universities champs, and won the 440 for 4 years running 1933/4/5/6. He also toured Japan with the N.Z. University Football team in the Summer of 1935/6. * * * /Lt. D.C. Bailey, a good type of rugged forward, played and captained the Marist Senior team for 7 years and during this time represented Auckland in 1937/8/9. • Was vice captain of Sacred Heart College Ist fifteen and represented the College at the secondary school athletic, champs, for several years. . * * . * Lt. A. E. Beyer, one of our Australian officers, has represented Victoria'. at both Rugby and Soccer in 1930 and 1934, also having played Australian rules for a season. Coming to N.Z. he played for ■. the Otahuhu Senior fifteen and represented Auckland as fullback in 1935/6. His ability to kick and handle a ball stood him in good stead when he came to N.Z. *** . . •2/Lt. J. A. Carroll, started his sports career ,in Taranaki and represented New Plymouth High School at Football, Cricket, and Boxing. He represented Waikato at Rugby in 1935/6 and 'Hamilton in 1935/6/7/8/9. He also played good football! for the Infantry in the Auckland senior competitions and made the .United Services team. _ * * * 2/Lt.,.C. Laurie represented Auckland B Team in 1931 and played for the University Senior fifteen in 1931/2. Plays Tennis for Eden & Epsom and is also a keen yachtsman.

. . * * * Lt. J. Connolly played for Training College for 2 years and represented' Auckland as wing .threequarter in 1930. , Captained the Bay of Plenty Rep team from 1930—1938. Nominated for the North Island team but debarred, from playing because of an injury. Rowed for the r Bay of Plenty at, Whakatarie and ran for the Auckland University in both the sprints and the jumps. * * * • •

Lt. J. G. Crawford, N.Z.D.C., has represented Poverty Bay at Rowing, Swimming and Football. He also represented Gisborne

High School at Rugby, and was the senior swimming champ, for 3 years. He received his Rowing Blue at Otago University and took part in all the rowing events at the N.Z. Universities Tournaments. * * * Lt. R. W. Adams, was a member of the Ist eleven at Hockey at the Auckland Grammar School and later represented Auckland University in the same sport in 1932/3. He also received his Varsity Blue at shooting in 1928/9/30/1/2. This should stand him in good stead. * * *

We have a good sportsman in one of our Padres who has devoted quite a bit of his time to several branches of sport.

> Padre Henley, in Tennis he represented Western Districts for 5 years and played in the Town vs Country tournament for 3 years. Played in the champion tennis team at New Plymouth at Pukekura Park for 3 years. He also played Badminton for Western Districts. His interests then turned to football and he played for Riverton, Southland and Marist Invercargill, coached Tennis, Badminton and Football teams and had the pleasure of coaching the champion school team of Taranaki the New Plymouth Convent who were unbeaten for 3 years. Not satisfied with this he turned to refereeing football and did this for a number of years at Riverton, Queenstown and Lawrence. -

* * * 2/Lt. A. M. B. Lenton, played all his sport in England and represented Richmond and Sussex as scrum half and has played in such good company as Peter Cramner who until he joined the Army captained the British Team, Owen Smith another well-known international and Spong who will be remembered for the fine games he played for the British Team when they last toured N.Z. He also captained the Ist fifteen and the Ist eleven at Brighton College', Sussex. * * *

S/Sgt. Warren figured in senior-Soccer for some years where he played for Ponsonby and represented Auckland as a goalkeeper on numerous occasions. He- also played top grade tennis taking part in the Caro Cup Competitions. ' * * *

Sgt. R. Pacey who has a handicap of 4 has played some good golf for his club Pupuke in Auckland and holds the course record for

the best round for 22 years of 65. Some golf !! ! He was also runner-up in the Club championship for 2 years running. * * *

Sgt. A. V. D. (Doug) Flett has also distinguished himself as a runner and footballer. He has played senior football for the Grammar Club- in .1934/5/6/7/8, and represented Auckland as wing threequarter in 1937 twice and 8 times in 1938. Also a member of the Barbarians Football Club in 1937/8/9. Owing to the War this club has, been abandoned most of its personnel having joined the Army. We said the Army. He annexed the Auckland provincial title in 1937. His best time for the 100 being 10. * * *

Cpl. S. (Swin) Hadley needs little introduction as a footballer having gained the coveted All Black jersey in 1928. He played senior football for the Marist Club from 19251936 during this period he represented Auckland every year'missing only in 1934 and would have then but for an injury. He toured South Africa in 1928 with the All Blacks and played for the North Island in 1928 and 1933. From 1930 he was player coach of the Marist team and after his retirement from competitive football in 1936 he still coached. He donned the Red jersey of the Barbarians . every year after that and although not as Ft as he was before he gave a very good account "of himself. * * * Pte. R. J. Gardiner trainer of the 3 year old Meadow who has been a good performer in N.Z. and are surprised to hear is in Bombay now. We might put a pound on it. We said might !'! ! ** ‘ *

2/Lt. C. McLean has proved himself a bird of flight and has represented several provinces in the. North Island amongst those being Wairoa H. B. Bush Districts, Thames and Wanganui at Rugby also captained the Infantry team at Papakura Camp. He rowed with some success at both Wanganui and in Auckland for the Waitemata Club. * * *

R.S.M. W. J. Kennedy, played football firstly in the South and made the school reps, but suffered an injury in 1929 while playing for Union in Dunedin. His time was then devoted to Tennis and played for St. Patricks in Dunedin, moving north he played B grade for Hutt Valley and later for Marists Juniors in Auckland m 1934. ’ .

Cpl. W. Allbon also needs no introduction as a golfer being one of the prominent professional in N.Z. was runner-up in the N.Z. Pro Champs, twice being beaten' by 1 stroke in both events firstly by A. E. Guy ' and secondly by Alex Murray. Has played exhibition matches with those two famous golfers Walter Hagen and Joe Kirkwood. Reached the semi-finals of the Centenary Tournament and was beaten by Alex Murray 2 and 1 in a 36 hole match.

Lt. E. H. Halstead figured very prominently in Varsity Tennis in Auckland and was a Varsity Rep in 1935/6/7. Played Auckland Senior Tennis for the Parnell Club 1937/8/9/ 40. Still has a pretty turn of speed in .the water. Was President of the Auckland Students’ Association and also Secretary of the N.Z. Universities Tournament 1938:

* * * R.S.M. Cliff Thomas represented Wellington at the National Swimming champs, in Water Polo and Surf and Life Saving championships from 1922 to, 1930 —also won as a runner the 100 yds. champ, in Egypt in 1917.

Cpl. Bourne has made a name for himself as a boxer and footballer and has held Canterbury titles in the Lightheavy and Heavyweight divisions besides/;, being the N.Z. champion in 1934. He..; fought Maurice Strickland in 1931. During the trip across he took part in the Ship’s Boxing champs, and won the Open and Open Heavyweight and the . Lightheavy Champs. He also represented Canterbury at Rugby in 1933/4 while he was playing for the Merrivale Club in Christchurch.

* * * • J. McAlpine who won the -Lightweight champ, on the ship has also done a bit of boxing and was Featherweight champion of Hawkes Bay and last year was runner-up in the Auckland Amateur Championships.

■* * * By the way who is the Broadcasting personality who when at Waitaki High School cleaned up the plate diving championship. He . forgot to tell me whether fthey, were Dental or enamel.

* * * - In the hustle and bustle of -the running of the. Ship’s sports we were not able to thank individually all those that helped to make

the whole show the success that it was but there is one man on the ship we must and that is the Bosun,’ Wilson is his name if you want to know. He erected boxing and wrestling rings and gave us every assistance that he could and it’s a pity that he doesn’t drink or we would shout for him. Thank you ‘ Bosun ’ for a nice job of work.

* * * ' Capt. R. O. Pearse has rowed for the Star Club in Wellington - and also at Wanganui and played Senior football for the Wellington Club and represented Wellington in the B Reps, in 1934.

Major Mantell Harding has devoted most of his time to Tennis and mostly to the executive side of it. Was Secretary of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association for. 7 years also on the N.Z. Tennis Council. Played Senior football for the Wellington Club and Rowed for Christ College. * * *

Capt. R. G. Webb represented New Plymouth High School in the Ist fifteen and also Canterbury College in,.l 927/28 and made the Canterbury B Reps, in 1928. Coached the Rotorua. High School and had the Ist fifteen for 1937/8/9/40. Was, President of the Bay of Plent Rugby Union besides refereeing Provincial football in 1935. In shooting ,he was a member of the Haslam Shield team for Canterbury College. Coached the boys at the Rotorua High School since' 1928. Among some of the boys that have passed through his hands as a football coach are H. Steele the Maori All Black, Trevor Berghen another All Black and Simpson who plays half back for Otago. .
