Golf Notes
By Chip-Shot THE season is now in full swing. Merv. A Williamson is coming along in great style. In fact, I heard it whispered he is going to be hard to head off this season. Ted Cook is playing well. Ted won the Killick Cup with Bill Forbes second. The Pearcey Trophy was won by Jock Baillie on a count back from Bill Forbes. We have some new recruits this year, and it looks as if some of our older members will have to brush up their golf to hold their places. We are still waiting for some of our ex-players back from overseas to put in an appearance at the links, and they will be very welcome when they get round to it. When we get our day off again each week we look forward to some good games together and the good old fellowship. Paremata Golf Club, at which our members enjoyed themselves so much at various times, are just as keen to have us with them as ever, which is very gratifying to us, and the friendly, spirit between the two clubs should be encouraged as it is really the essence of the game.
We hear Bob Ogden has joined another club recently, a golf club, I mean, so we will have to watch his handicap. And who were the two Bills who went for a round every day for a week ? Someone suggested to me they were getting in some sly practice, but personally I would leave out the word sly. Since the above notes were written we have visited Paremata Golf Club. A peculiar feature about our visits there is that the weather does not prevent us enjoying our day. This time, in spite of the weather, which was not the best, we played 18 holes as usual, and again the official verdict was a draw. One of our prominent players, Sam Lawler, partnered by Norm. Aitken (Paremata) won the four ball-best ball bogey competition with the good score of six up. Imagine their surprise when they found that the penalty for winning was to shout for the entire company. They did not seem to mind, rather they appeared to me to enjoy it. Quite a number of our younger members were with us and are showing signs of becoming really tough players, and also good singers. You ought to hear some of them on the 19th. Eric Foothead, who won the competition in conjunction, with a lady player at our last visit, did not come to light this time. I noticed Eric was playing with a male, perhaps that makes a difference. Believe it or not, everyone was at the station in plenty of time for the last train to Wellington.
