Letter of the Month
THIS month I have chosen from the mail bag a letter received from Cyril Finderup. I think' a few extracts from it will be of interest to you. “Dear Dick.—l would like to thank the Comforts Committee and yourself for the kindness you have shown me by sending me the papers, etc. I have always received the little magazine ‘On Our Job’ fairly regularly. We (the Navy) are helping out the Air Force for a while. They had no personnel to man their crash boats, so the Navy loaned them full crews to carry on with in the meantime until the R.N.Z.A.F. Marine Section train their own men. It’s a pretty good job, too. We are on call 24 hours a day to proceed to sea and rescue any airmen who have crashed and require picking up. Unfortunately I cannot give you a very detailed description of our boat, Dick, owing to censorship regulations, but she is pretty fast, and is American built, not unlike those P.T. boats. At present we are doing a refit, so everything on board is upside down, but normally we are fairly ship-shape on board. We have a good crowd of boys, so that helps a lot. Apart from things getting monotonous at times, we get our little moments of variety. I am afraid the climate doesn’t agree with me at all; it’s too damn hot. Still, if I was. down home now, I would be grumbling about the cold. A man is never satisfied. Give my regards to the boys on the job.—CYRIL FINDERUP, L/Sea.” I suggest that some of you chaps, when you find time, could write to Cyril, whose address I enclose, and thus establish an interchange of correspondence with each other to • your mutual advantage. The address is: C. R. Finderup, L/Sea, R.N.Z.N. 7008, c/o R.N.Z.A.F. Station, N.Z.A.P.O. • 348 Overseas.
