The outside of the sealed kiln : The furnaces are fed with coal for two days, when the air reaches the heat of 2500° F. The kiln is allowed four days to cool down— rapid cooling would crack the pottery. When the cups come out they are light brown—called biscuitware at this stage—and still porous.
