POTTERY
The large-scale manufacture of household pottery in the North Island has a very short history behind it. At New Lynn, in Auckland, a new industry has grown up surprisingly quickly. Without the help of overseas craftsmen, by experiment, trial and error, necessity has developed a flourishing production of cups, basins, chamber-pots, and other vessels of common utility. Besides other articles, 4,500 cups, 2,000 basins, and 500 chamber-pots are made every day by one hundred and sixty people.
It used to be said that we hadn’t suitable pottery clays in New Zealand, but the clays used at New Lynn are all found here. There are four different kinds, blended; the bulk comes from North Auckland, the rest from the South Island.
In other parts of the world the factory is usually found next the clay-pit, but you will see that it is more economic to transport clay from North Auckland than manufactured jugs, bowls, and cups.
