SOUTH PACIFIC BOXING. NEW ZEALAND AREA FINALS.
THE OUTSTANDING BOOR OF THS SWING WAS W. B. NEWTON, 1471 b, WHO FOUGHT WILLIAMS A COLOURED BOY. . NEWTON SOUGHT A COOL,HEADY AND 'SCIENTIFIC BATTLE AGAINST A FAST, FIT AND VIGOROUS FIGHTER WHO AT NO STAGE HAD THE MEASURE OF NEW* TON. A Wsiiingtonian who had his in - itial training at St. Bats and has not had more than half a dozen ring appearances to his credit W, Nowton was both unlucky and unfortunate. Unluckyin in that he lost by a narrow margin in the last round in a battle in which ho was master all the way. Unfortunate in that ho had injured his arm earlier in the week, which told on him at the close of the fight and he, to a greater extent Aha ft Billy Brown, suffered from the local climate. He lost fully ten pounds in tho short time he had been on the Island. J;; TRY as he might Williams could not lure Newton into a mix up; this was a type of fighting that Williams had not met before. Bq led with his loft and hoiked the fight only to find a snappy left knocking his head back. He fough well in a close rally at end of round when he connected with jabs to the . body. ::: AT the opening of the second round it was obvious Willi-
TON.
ams
was puzzled; ho was not getting h hone with his punches. Newton had him measured and was jabbing a left with a good right following. , Back moves and side slides were •/ used for the first time of the tournament and half the bouts over. WITH the opening of the third round Nowton mot Williams on his own ground and after a fast and two handed battle Williams took cover in a smother. Ho caught Newton a csip with a rangy right ho tried hard to land from the start, but his timing was spoilt by speed. Newton drove in a solid left, Wiliams taking it on the chin camo back with □ right to the body. Thoy stood toe to too. Newton weakened. As Williams came on him to press home tho advantage. Nowtori resorted to a weave which took the, sting out of the punches® It was tho host round oftfe evening and a splendid bout. :: s THE bout bwtwoon Bill Brown 135 lb. and o‘oe Rodriquez 134 lb. registered a win for Billy Brown. Billy, an Invercargill lad, needs no build up. Rodriquez took the aggressive in the opening round and landed smac tailing hooks . Brown landed wish a good loft. There was little infighting , both lads breaking clean® The second round found Brown still on tho defense and un- / able to penetrate Rodriquez’s aggressive forcings His puonhes lacked force. This round was about even.- V/1 th : tho opening of the third round Brown had the measure of his man; folrifting with his loft, Rodriquez woo trapped into loading while a fast back move brought Brown in with fast lotfis and rights that steadied Rodriquez. Prom early in tho round Brown took tho lead and went on to win a good fight. :: AH interesting sidelight on the tournament was N.Zcrs use of the straight loft, wider knowledge of ring craft and sound defence,. The jocrl can lads tended to depend upon aggression, hooks and speed. .Of ewery butt it may be said that it was a model of good sportsmanship. 45: FIGHTERS from New Caledonian area captured six bouts from the team from N.2. • THE finals which will be fought in a for ward area Me to take place shortly. The team Trom this area should put up a good allowing pro vidlng the climate doos not prove too enervating.
