Its motive is to interfere with the building of a centre by hindering P—Q4. - ; 1
(b) Ardid no doubt did not wish to mix matters with the other alternative 5 . . . ,Kt xP. ? (c) 6 R—KI is more often played, but this is equally good. (d) New to theory, the old line was 9 B—; P—B4; 10 P—Q4, Q—etc. Alekhine has added more to chess theory than any other and this certainly seems sound. (e) Better would have been 9 . . . , Kt—Q2; or 9 . ..., P x P. (f) Threatening 14 Kt x P, etc., as well as the text line. (g) Here 16 ... , R—QI; with the general plan of following with . . . B— Kt2; . . . , .Kt—Bl; . .. . , KKt3; etc., trying to neutralise Whites’ rooks, was the only way to save disaster. (h) Taking advantage of Black’s seventeenth move.
(i) Better 19 . . . , KB —Kt2. His cramped position is now exploited by Alekhine’s genius. (j) Fatal. Correct was 20 ... , P—jgg. . - (k) Not 21 P x P, P x P; 22 Kt (Kt) xP; B— and White loses a piece. (l) 22 . .■; , P x P; is impossible because of 23 R—Q6 ! The reader should note carefully the disastrous consequences of neglect of the open Q file and try to profit from the Spanish champion’s experience. ■ ~ (m) There is no satisfactory defence.
