THE GAME OF CHESS.
Chess is a popular game in the Argentine. At a recent tournament this brisk little game was played. The Wing Gambit is theoretically unsound, but every now and then takes a new lease of life. The latest variation is illustrated in this struggle between two young and enterprising players. SICILIAN DEFENCE Game 8 Mar del Plata, 1944. White Black Rosetto Iliesco 1. P—K4 P—QB4 2. Resigns (k) (a) By playing the Sicilian Defence, Black shows a desire to counterattack. White however by giving up this pawn shows his determination to attack even more fiercely.
(b) This is recognised as Black’s best line. Taking the second pawn gives-White a terrific attack and 3 . ~ P—K4 or 3 . . , P —K3 have been proved inferior.
(c) The hew idea. 4P — Kt— QBS; 5 P — etc., was the old line which was in Black’s favour. 4 P x P, Q x P; 5 B —Kt2, P — etc., is an old line that this new variation is based on.
(d) Other good possibilities are 7 Kt —R3 or 7 B—R3.
(e) If 8 . . ,P—K5 ; 9 QKt—Kts, K—QI; 10 KKt— QKt—B3; 11 Q—R4, Kt— 12 B— with a good game for White.
