A Collection of Collectives
f T might be said that all the world’s • a collection made up of all kinds of individual collections and collectors. There are such civil (more usually uncivil) collectors as debt collectors, . tax collectors, garbage collectors, and charity collectors—-to mention but a few. And there is a similar collection of collections such as church collections, stamp collections, curio collections, and (more curious still) collections of people. A collector of collections, for CUE found that in making his collection he used a varied collection of collectives. Everyone has heard of a gaggle of geese, a shoal of herrings and a school of porpoises, but how many have heard of the collectives ; collected by this collector ? Starting with the army, the collector (he’s now APR) became mixed up with headquarters and discovered these: . a negative of quartermasters a giggle of typists „ an argue of adjutants a titter of telephonists an injection of M.O.’s a drill of dentists > ‘ Still thinking in terms of the army, he became entangled with . / a jazz of jeeps (>■
a hadit of soldiers a surplice of padres a Shaef of war correspondents a thistledown of paratroops a frustration of pin-ups a thankqueue of Tuts and he could not resist: a smirk of signorinas a shufti of Wogs Then his thoughts wandered homewards and he pondered on: a bleach of blondes . a pot of landlords < a bacchanalia of barmaids '<■ • _ which somehow produced: an echelon of elephants a slither of snakes But he had other recollections, too: a flight of bookmakers a gurgle of crooners a gargle of chemists a goggle of girls a heard of rumours He says a collection of collectives can produce quite amusing results. Fortify yourself with a vestful of vinos end try it some time.
