ENEMY ATTACK ON KAITOKE

West Coast Regiment Repels “Invaders” REALISTIC MANOEUVRES AND BATTLE

For more than 30 hours the Welling-ton-West Coast Regiment was engaged in large-scale manoeuvres to prevent an enemy attack on Kaitoke. Word of an “invasion” was received when the regiment was on its way to Marton racecourse by motor transport yesterday. The enemy had “landed” on the south beach. The transports were left and the unit marched to Kaitoke afforestation camp from Warrengate Road, a distance of eight miles. The regiment bivouacked in the open at the afforestation camp last night and began an attack on the enemy at daylight. The battle was spread over a wide area from Kaitoke to the airport. The invaders, who had been advancing on points above Kaitoke Stream, were routed, the climax of the battle being shortly before midday. Blank cartridges were used in rhe engagement, which was as near to active service conditions are possible. On the return of . the regiment to camp late this afternoon officers expressed themselves as well satisfied with the operations.
