OBITUARY

MILITARY HONOURS FUNERAL OF TERRITORIAL The funeral took place on the 17th, at the Crematorium, Karori Cemetery, with military honours, of Bombardier G. R. M. Moffat, of the Bth Medium Battery, N.Z.A. A firing party of artillerymen from Fort Dorset was in attendance and the mourners included three members of the Bth Battery now in camp at Foxton. The late Bombardier Moffat was a son of Mr. Robert Moffat, of Grove Road, Kelburn. He was educated at Wellington College and Otago Boys’ High School, where he was a prefect and a member of the first fifteen. After leaving secondary school he entered the employ of W. D. and H. 0. Wills. Until he entered hospital a short time before his death he was a serving member of the Bth Battery. He had also volunteered for overseas service with the Expeditionary Force and was waiting to be called up for camp. NAVAL FUNERAL LIEUT. J. B. STEPHENSON The funeral of Lieutenant J. B. Stephenson, R.N.V.R., of the Achillies and formerly of Wellington, who died in Auckland on Thursday week last, took place at Waikumete Cemetery with full naval honours. A naval party, including a marine band, was drawn up near the cemetery entrance when the cortagc arrived. The coffin, covered with a Union Jack, was carried by bluejackets between the ranks of a -large firing party which lined the drive-

way with arms reversed. The Rev. ■ G. M. McKenzie, chaplain of the R.N. 1 V.R. preceded it and the rest of the party followed, the band playing Chopin’s “Marche Funebre.” After the service at the grave which was in a plot set apart for the Navy, three volleys were fired, and the firing party presented arms before marching off. Relatives and a number of civilian friends of Lieutenant Stephenson attended the funeral. Wreaths were carried from the hearse to the grave- : side by a group of bluejackets.
