10th Heavy Regiment’s Band

Under the command of Captain C. A. Williamson, N.Z.A., some sixty picked men of the Examination Battery together with thirty men from the Dorset Battery, took part in an arduous route march on Wednesday, 4th July. The occasion afforded the newly formed band of the 10th Heavy Regiment an opportunity to gauge their ability as a regimental band under marching conditions. Though it was a distinct “outing” for the Battery insofar as they wore gas masks at the “ready” position and carried rifles and sidearms, it was really the band that was on trial. They came through the trial very

well indeed, their rendition of several marches including “Wairoa,” “Victoria,” “Our Director,” “Invercargill” and “Beei’ Barrell Polka” — reflected the greatest credit on Bandmaster Sergeant Craven. The band, though practising only eight hours a week, under unfavourable conditions, for less than three months, has achieved a high standard. The Band’s twenty-one units are comprised of six cornets, one big bass, one euphonium, one E flat cornet, one tenor horn, one baritone, three trombones, and a roll of six drums. The Drum-major, Staff Sergeant A. C. Kilmore has already moulded the band into a compact body and considering that this was the band’s first public appearance their martial bearing and drill in general were to be commended. The route covered was approximately six miles, and the deportment of the troops themselves was favourably commented on.
