STEEPLE BATTERY
(Contributed by
— SPORT. In the field .of sport Steeple Battery have lived up to a challenge they issued in their last issue of the “Camp News” by defeating Dorset Battery by 7 points to 3 in Rugby. On the Soccer field E.L. and E.D. have defeated us by two goals to one. Congratulations to them and we certainly enjoyed the game. Now that the hockey season is in full swing the Steeple enthusiasts are settling down to their game. In the first match of the season we were defeated by a good combination from Palmer Head, the score being 5—2.
We are confident that in our next clash we will be able to turn the tables on the team. So here’s hoping, Palmer Head. With the large influx of new recruits we have been able to pick a much stronger team and to select players from both Junior and Senior grades. The Battery is very lucky in having L/Sgt. Beattie as captain. He was a senior player in one of the leading Wellington teams and if more time can be devoted to practice under an experienced eye we hope to give every team we play a rattling good gameand maybe we’ll win. 4 Somebody started something he couldn’t stop when he blew his whistle in the early hours one evening. This resulted in a complete black-out and a mad rush of tramping feet to action posts. Much derision has been thrown at Steeple Battery, but this event only goes to show that one battery is endeavouring to keep itself on top of any occasio/P which may arise. This training has been found the most instructive method of finding faults. We saw thePiquet turn out in force one afternoon last week only to find a small boy amusing himself outside the gate with a whistle. PERSONAL. Our best wishes to Gnr. “Blue” Attwell for a speedy recovery and quick return from Public Hospital. Gnr. P. M. Hogan has rejoined Steeple’s ranks after a long spell off. We welcomed to our ranks Gnrs. N. D. McArthur, D. Cameron, R. Johnston, R. A. Mummery, P. L. Holloway, and E. P. Corbett.
We hope that now Gnr. Bill Monteith has taken up his residence in Goebell’s house again his sleep is not so rudly disturbed by new recruits pulling him out of bed. Much amusement was caused by Gnr. Joe Robinson marching the new recruits over to mess whilst the n.c.o. in charge was on leave. In a very high pitched voice the wrong turn was given causing some confusion. Never mind; Joe, you’ll be a senior yet. A ‘C” Watch flash. » One farmer required for the home front. Leaving for his backblock home, the battery now require another growler. . 1 '? ,7 SPECIAL NOTICE. After the black out (mentioned in Steeple Notes) there was a discussion on the relative merits of the old and new methods of fixing bayonets. A . certain Bombardier spoke learnedly on the subject. . Any good effect his words may have had was lost when he sloped arms very smartly before ap- : proaching an officer. The slope was barely completed when there was a dull thud behind him , and he looked around to see his bayonet lying on the ground. “Anonymous.” , • «
