j| YULE SMILE Mrs. Smythe was = expecting some evacuated children, and on being in- * formed that they were fairly big boys, she decided to engage a strong, capable woman to look after them. 1 Stt The - boys arrived before the foster mother, and as Mrs. 'Smythe had to t be away from home v that day, she left instructions for her. “I want you to get the boys thoroughly bathed and put to bed before my return, Mrs. Brown,” she wrote. “Don’t stand any nonsense from them. * Be firm.” On - her return in the evening, the ■house was strangely peaceful.- “Well, Brown,” she said, “did'you find the boys easy to manage?” “Fairly,” replied ' Mrs. Brown. t “Five of them weren’t -so bad. But, oh, my! I ’ad a ’ell of a time trying to bath the little ginger fellow in ,horn-rimmed glasses.” ’ ar “Great Scott!” cried Mrs. Smythe. “That’s, my husband.” jSL, •. • : ’ ■■ ■ ■' • * ; ' * * * * ■ ■ “It was zero-hour,” said the oldm timer, “and I was just going over the top when a bullet hit me here and went straight thro’ me” (pointing to this left breast). . “But,” protested a listener, “that’s your heart, and it would have killed 6 you.” f “I know, I know,” retorted the oldtimer, “only you see, my heart hap- * pened to be in my boots at the time.”
