Captain H. M. Ervine-Andrews, East Lancashire Regiment, France, May 31/June 1, 1940.
On the night of May 31/June 1, Captain Ervine-Andrews took over a thousand yards of ; the Dunkirk defences along the Canal de Bergues. For ten hours, against heavy odds, and under intense fire/ he held the position. When the enemy succeeded in crossing the canal on both flanks, and one of his platoons was in danger of /being driven back, Captain-Ervine .Andrews called for volunteers. ’ Going forward, he climbed on to the roof of a barn. Under fire from mortars and armourpiercing bullets, he accounted fo'r seventeen: of the enemy with, his rifle, and many more - with a Bren - gun.- When the house was shattered, he ..sent back his wounded in the remaining carrier. Swimming and wading up to the chin for over a mile, he led back the remaining eight njem He then took, up position again. . Captain Ervine-And-rews was born in 1911,-at New Ross, Colversondy County Wexford, Eire.
