The Devotional Period

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:1-8. W.R. Hymnal, No. 136. “Little deeds of kindness, little deeds orf lo\e. Make our earth an Eden, like to Heaven above. So our little errors lead our souls away From the path of duty, far in sin to stray.” From small beginnings have often come big achievements! Our lives are full of little things, but to so many, little things are unimportant, while in reality they are of the utmost value, making for joy and gladness, or, perhaps, for untold misery.

A hasty word at parting in the morning may mean a whole day of restless anxiety and worry. A smile and a greeting of a passer-by on the street may light the day with sunshine. It is the little tilings that count for so much! It is not only the little act or word or prayer. It could be a little note of sympathy or of appreciation; a little "something” sent to an invalid to tempt her appetite, or perhaps a little posy. “Oh yes,” we are tempted to think, “something so small is not worth while.” Jesus said “Let your light so shine that they may see your good works and glorify your Father, which is in Heaven.” That is it. To glorify our Heavenly Father.and Jesus Christ our Saviour. Even a cup of cold water given in the name of a disciple shall not lose its reward. Not a material reward, but the joy and satisfaction of knowing that even a little has been given to help another. “To give is better than to receive,” is an old maxim, but experience proves its worth.

"Kind words can never die, cherished and blest, God knows how deep they lie, stored in the breast Like childhood’s simple rhymes said o’er a thousand times (io through all years and climes the heart to cheer.

“Sweet thoughts can never die, though like the flowers Their brightest hues may fly in wintry hours. But when the gentle dew gives them their charms anew. With many an added hue they bloom again. Sweet thoughts can never die!” Prayer

Our father in Heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we present our praise to Thee, and ask Thee for blessing. Teach us to work and to pray, and to serve Thee day by day. May we never despise the little things in life, but ever give of our best, seeking to help others and to honour Thee. Draw’ very near to our President and our other Dominion leaders. Endue them and us with power to live rightly. We ask Thee to bless all who are sick and afflicted, the lonely, and those in distress. In the Name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Friend. —Amen. The Lord's Prayer. R. C. GREEN (Dom. Evangelistic Supt.)
