Dr. Dorothy Tarrant, M.A., Ph.DL Prpfesaor i Emeritus of Greek, University of London, w;\a in fviied to give the first Agnes E. Slack Mar erial lecture, the subject being “Drink in Social liife” I 4 Professor Tarrant, who has recently been elected President of the Hellenic Society, is fne first woman to hold this office. She described the origin of the present-day toast from the days ot the early Greeks, and showed that it was both unsuitable and unnecessary to drink any toast in an alcoholic liquor in these days.
West Australia During Home *and Family Week the W.C.T.U. had ar. exhibit in Perth Town Hall,‘and served refreshments to large crowds and received many favourable comments on both. New South Wales Fifteen new members were gained for the Mosman Union as a result of a meeting at the Church of Christ there. West Washington L.T.L. entered a float in the Senaqua Parade, a Pioneer celebration. Thirtyifive boys and girls dressed in red, white and blue "manned” the truck, which was decorated in the same colours. The slogan used throughout the parade by the L.T.L. was, “We want no beer; we want no wine; milk and water suit us fine. The Sentry gained an “Honourable Mention” Ribbon. Canada The Convention Hospitality Fund. The National Unions whose delegates enjoyed the overflowing hospitality of the Canadian Union will be interested to learn that all ten provinces contributed generously to the Hospitality Fund, in great loyalty to the National and World W.C.T.U. Newfoundland, the new province, sent a delegate, who came farthest of all Canadian delegates. The total sum of about £3,900 in round figures from a membership of some 9,500 women speaks highly of love and sacrifice. Puerto Rico “El Lazo Rlanco,” the Pan-American White Ribbon magazine, of which Mrs. Rivera is the Editor, publicises the statement that tea and nonalcoholic beverages are again coming into popularity at the White House, and it is believed that many Washington hostesses will adopt the same custom instead of serving cocktails. W.C.T.U. Headquarters Miss Frances Salisbury, of New Zealand, has been on more than one occasion to see us, and when possible attends public meetings held at National Headquarters She was a popular member of the I.T.U. Summer School and enabled New Zealand to he represented for the first time.
