Annual District Conventions

Northland. Convention held on 3rd October in Presbyterian Hall, Dargaville. District President, Mrs. Green, was in the chair and led devotions. Representatives present from Te Kopuru, Dargaville, Whangarei and Donnelly’s Crossing. T he Dominion President, Mrs. Toomer, as Guest Sneaker, led afternoon devotions and ga\e an enlightening address on the origin and working of the W.C.T.U. She presented three twenty years’ service badges to Dargaville members. An after-lunch around the table chat was also helpful and encouraging. Election of district officers was Pres., Mrs. Lane; Vice-Pres., Mrs. Green; Rec. Sec., Mrs. Jolly; Corr. Sec., Mrs. F. T. Moorhead; Treas., Mrs Hill-Taylor; Peace Supt., Mrs. Roberts; Philanthropic Supt., Mrs. Jackson; C.0.R.5.0. Supt., Mrs. Lawrence; W.K. Supt., Mrs. Jolly. Mrs. Roberts thanked the retiring President for her loyal services and presented her with a shoulder spray. Branch reports revealed progress. Dargaville had temperance film shown, also 21 children sat Temperance Quiz, and 4 gamed prize* Te Kopuru worked with the N.Z. Alliance in battling against the building of a hotel in the town. A quantity of clothing had been forwarded to CORSO. A remit passed and forwarded to Dominion Convention. Duet sung by Sister June Winchcombe and Miss F. Wordsworth. Manawatu. Convention held in Palmerston North on 2nd Octcber, Miss C. Jamieson presiding and welcoming delegates and officers from Levin, Feilding and Palmerston North. Opening devotions conducted by Mrs. Kennerley. Only Youth Work accompished was in Little White Ribboners’ Dept. Feilding had a difficult year but had fulfilled all commitments and observed special days. Work in Palmerston North and Levin wHI maintained. Mrs. Toomcr’s visit an encouragement and inspiration to unions. Resolutions re liquor for Maoris and projectors for films passed for Dominion Convention. Unions are asked to help Korean appeal. N.CAV. report given by Miss Jamieson. Officers elected are: Pres., Mrs. A. C. Kennerley; \ icePres., Miss C. Jamieson; Sec., Mrs. M. R. Claridge; Treasurer, Mrs. D. McNiven. Mrs. A. E. R. Joblin addressed a public meeting in the afternoon and gave a graphic account of her visit to Oberammergau in 1930 to see the Passion Play. Much-appreciated solos and recitations contributed by Mrs. Gourlay, Palmerston North and Mrs. Cummings, Feilding. Ten prizes, including top prizes in Grades 1 and 2 of Temperance Quiz were presented. Nelson, 26th September. The District President, Mrs. Toomer, presided over the Convention, delegates from Richmond, Motueka and Nelson being present. The Rev. A. K. Petch, in conducting devotions advised the W.C.T.U. to make widely known the fact that they were fighting other social evils as well as the liquor traffic. Three remits prepared for Convention. Encouraging reports from Secretary, Treasurer and District Superintendents. The Guest speaker, Miss V. Jackson, of Masterton, spoke on the missionary aspect of the W.C.T.U. in the morning, and at a public meeting in the afternoon on the World Convention, 1930, in England. The meeting closed with the Benediction.

Wellington. Convention at Lower Hutt, with a good attendance. Miss Kirk presiding and leading devotions. Support of members asked for W.P.P.

Conference funds. Dominion officers a*ked to consider new design for 20 year service badge. Carterton reported case of raffle by a well-known women’s organisation in which liquor prizes were wen by two children. Protests had been made. Masterton active in opposing temporary licenses to sports bodies. Appeals to Parliament being made on this matter. Remit to Convention re songs in school holiday broadcasts passed. Two Unions reported contact with lighthouses, literature and magazines being sent. Five Quiz prizes won in the district. Annual reports showed good work done. Finance satisfactory. Ditty bags, knitted garments and cash donations received for New Plymouth Rest. 193 subscribers to The White Ribbon. All district officers re-elected. Next meeting in Masterton in February. Otago. 23th October. Convention held in North East Valley Bapti-st Church. Rev. Graves extended a welcome to the 40 delegates present on behalf of the Ministers' Association. A very profitable time was spent discussing the work of the district, ar.d resolutions were thoroughly discussed and carried. The Rev. L. C. Clements gave interesting and encouraging address on his experiences as a otitli in the Y work, referring to Miss C. McLay’s work as Y Supt., and the way the work hr.d gone forward until today it was supported by public bodies and kindred organisations. Officers elected were: Pres., Mrs. J. Hiett; \ ice-Pres., Mcsdames W. Dickinson and Jones; Sec., Mr<. W E. lies; Treas., Mrs. J. Graham.
