THE INFLUENCE OF LIQUOR ON A MOTORIST

Ex-Publican’s Verdict

In a Taranaki newspaper ,of February Ist, 1951, Mr. R. D. Wilson of New Plymouth makes the following comment on the influence of liquor on the consumer: “If the charge, ‘drunk while in charge of a motor vehicle’ were changed to ‘reckless driving while under the influence of alcohol/ it might be the means of saving countless innocent lives from accident and death. The smell of liquor from any person’s L *eath, when driving a car, should be enough to convict, without the doctor’s testimony.

“Everyone knows that the effect of liquor on individuals cannot he judged by the number they consume, or when it is going to aa. A* an expublican of long standing. 1 had every opportunity to watch this. To state that one glass of spirits has no effect is erroneous. Today, one drink can have the same effect as three or four tomorrow, on the same person.’’
