REV. JAMES SMITH
Former Dominion ‘Y” President It is with special pleasure and pride that our members will learn of the call of Mr. Jim Smitlf to the ministry of the Congregational Church in Wh angarei and of his induction to that charge on February 22nd. Last year he wrote a challenging article for me for the Beacon, and as a vital and enthusiastic Christian worker, he continues to maintain his en husiasm for the Temperance Cause. Our prayers and interest will be with him, as we wish for him an abundant ministry.
THE BASIC CONSIDERATION is to teach that natural living is the best life has to oiler, that the use of’drugs is dangerous, and that real satisfaction in life conies front facing and not evading the realities of life. Such teachings must originate in the home hy example as veil as precept, and he repeated in the school. It is a tragic fact that 70 per cent, of alcoholics started drinking and first got drunk in their teens. It should he repeatedly emphasised that alcohol i> a drug habit, and that one in 1.-> or JO social drinkers forms the habit. —Dr. Andrew 0. Ivy, Vice-President, University of Illinois.
