Meeting closed by Mrs. Page. September. Mrs. Hayward presided, ami Mrs. L. G. Hanna was guest shaker, her subject being the “ league of Mothers/ Memorial Window to Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Following afternoon tea, Mrs. Sedgwick spoke on the evils of gambling, of which she .iad much experience in Australia as well as in New Zealand. Mrs. Tillman to be delegate to District Convention. Five patient* visited at Mental Hospital by Mrs. Thornton. Mrs. Tillman read an article on “ Wines in the Bible.” and a story showing the had effects of Alcohol in industry. August 25th. Good attendance. One new member. Eighth birthday celebrated with Social afternoon in Fendalton Hall, when visitors from other Unions attended and brought greetings. Programme of music, elocution and a sketch was provided bv Bryndwr Women’s Institute Glee Club. Regret for absence through illness of President, who had made the birthday cake. Riccarton. July 14th. Seventeen present. Mrs. Griffiths presided. Miss Hughes leading I)evotions. Bryndwr’* invitation to birthday celebration accepted. Letter of appreciation to he sent to Mr. Rolf Porter on his decision again alcoholic liquor for the 1950 British Empire games. Mental Hospital visited and dainties taken to patients. *' W.R.” report by Mrs. McLean. Members to interview S.S. teachers and try to gain interest in Essay and Poster Competitions. Sympathy to relatives of late Mrs. Black. Delegate to District Convention to be Mrs. Gainsford. Letter of thanks from the Rev. Mr. Horwood for donation towards the Memorial Window to Mr. and Mrs. T. F.. Taylor. 500 leaflets purchased for distribution. Three large bundles of “ White Ribbons ” to lie sent to the Churches of district. World Convention remits endorsed. Mrs. Griffiths read a comforting extract and pronounced the Benediction. August 11th. Mrs. Trewth presided in absence of President. Devotions led by Miss Hughes, who also recited a beautiful poem. Several visitors, and one new member welcomed. Devotions led by Mrs. Mcllwraith. District Executive report given by Mrs. Noonan. A tribute paid to the late Mrs. Black, I) strict Secretary, for her untiring work among our Unions, and sympathy expressed with her relatives. The monthlyprayer meeting had been attended by nine members. F'ive patients visited at Mental Hospital by Mesdames Aston and Hardman. New leaflets for distribution ordered. Alcohol in medicines was the subject of a talk by the President. Captain Hadfleld (S.A.) also gave a talk on “ Places and Persons ” in connection with her work. Solo by Miss P. Mrs. Watts appointed Cradle Roll Suj>erintendent in place of Mrs. I’eperell, who has held the office for 16 years. After tea, Mr. Hoffman gave an interesting and thought-provoking address on the liquor traffic and the coming Poll. Mrs. Noonan thanked the stx-aker. Benediction. jpreydon. The Rev. H. W. Haigh sj»oke at the monthly meeting on the serious increase n. liquor consumption in our small country, and advised us to watch the workings of the new Licensing laws. A paper dealing with the history of the Franchise from the time of the Romans to the present was given by Mrs. Seivers, and much enjoyed. Mesdames Kenny and Ross contributed a most enjoyable programme of music. Benediction. District Officers nominated. OTAGO DISTRICT Oamaru. July 11th. Devotions taken by a new member, Miss Lillington. Thanks to Ministers’ Association for showing our film, '* It’s the Brain that Counts,” to Boys’ and Girls' High Schools and Rotary Club, and an after-Church rally. Appreciation shown at each showing. The Church of Christ, Presbyterian and Baptist Ladies’ Guilds have asked for talks on our work, which were willingly given, new members being gained thereby. F'loral spray to be sent to a friend for her 93rd birthday. Most interesting Travel Talk given by Miss Cowan. August. New members gained through visits to Church organisations. Archdeacon Olds of Napier expressed his willingness to help us in any way possible Miss Cowan sjioke on the work of John Newton, Thomas Scott, William Cowper, Wilberforce and Leigh Richmond. Lawrence. August 2nd. Fair attendance, Miss Ferguson presiding. Letter from Dominion Secretary received and discussed. Resolved to try to '.iold a public meeting before Polling time. B-nediction.
