Although the Chinese drink liquor she had never seen a drunken person. On conversion, the Chinese gave up the u*e of opium, wine-drinking and these habits hrtug discouraged by the Chinese Christian leaders. Two solo* were sung by Mis, Lauder. Blenheim: Women's District United Day of Prayer held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, August 31st; sessions from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sjieakers, Mesdames L. baylcy, F.. Ford, A. FearDunbar and P. Stephens. Special day of thanksgiving and praise for answered prayer; Victory in the Pacific; and the end of wax. All sessions were full of interest and hymns suitable to the occasion were chosen.

Tua Marina: August 21st. Meeting held at the home of Mrs. E. Smith. The president chaired a good attendance under very pleasant circumstances. Peace having come to the world, this being our Peace Day. Mrs. Smith read a very interesting paj*r on Peace, this liemg verv much appreciated. A cheery letter was read from Mrs. Gardiner. Moneys for rite organising fund, capitation N.Z. fund and secretary’s account were j>assed for payment. Mrs. burroughs was elected delegate for Convention, which members were asked to do their best to attend. A Competition arranged by Mrs. Smith was won by Mrs. K. Knight. Sydenham: August 2nd. Meeting held in the Colombo Street baptist Hall, Mrs. J. F'lltr, otir I‘resident, occupying the cha’r, with eighteen members jirrsent. Devotions were conducted by Mrs. Davies, after which the usual business was transacted. A lette r was received front the Minister of Health (Hon. Nordmeyer) stating that everything jxissible was being done to alleviate the |M>sition as regards shortage of Maternity Hospital accommodation, and that pp.ns for the construction of a new St. Helen’s building would be prepared at the earliest opportunity. A very informative and interesting address on "Elizabeth Undaunted" was given b\ Miss bailey. After stating that she was heartily in accord with our work of fighting the liquor traffic. Miss bailey dealt with the difficulties and dangers associated with pioneer nursing in India in the early days of Missionary activity. In sjnte of numerous setbacks, the nurses struggled on bravely, and eventually won the confidence and trust of the jieople under their care.

The meeting was brought to a close with j»rayer led by Mrs. J. K. Archer.

SOUTH CANTERBURY DISTRICT Ashburton: August 7th. “Sailors’ Day” observed. Small attendance owing to bad weather. Mrs. Adjutant Smith jire-ided and opened the meeting with a few appropriate remarks about the courage and endurance of those men whose lives are sj>ent on the sea. Temperance fact. Letter received from Mrs. butler, referring to the death of Mrs. Douglas, of Tetnuka, a very prominent member. The Sailors’ Day address was given by the Rev. J. browning, who said: "The debt owing to those who go down to the sea in ships could never he repaid.” Collection for seamen amounted to £2/3/-. and servicable gifts were received. Sister Mildred thanked Mr. browning lor his address. Mr. browning closed with prayer. Temuka: August .Nth. Meeting presided over by Mrs. Hewson, who took devotions, being "Memorial Day," Mrs. Hewson chose for her subject the life and work of our late secretary and co evangelistic superintendent, Mrs. J. Miss Ford elected delegate to District Convention. Members sincerely deplored that Victory celebrations were acconqianied by excessive drinking and the number of in hotels, workmen and motorists.
