HAWKE’S BAY DISTRICT CONVENTION.
(at Napier, on November 2nd. 1944). President in tbe chair. Devotions by Rev. Copeland. Resolved that tbe text books, “Hiysical Fitness” and “Keeping Fit,” permission for the placing of which in all schools in the district has been granted by Education authorities —159 schools in all —be paid for out of cash in hand. Questions were discussed. Pannevirke reported flourishing Rand of Hope re-established. Mrs. Wallen sang noontide hymn and led devotions. Afternoon devotions by Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Calcott—their message, "Carry on.” Officers re-elected. Roll call responded by slogans: Dannevirke: Are you a Wowser ' It not, why not? Wowsers only want social evils remedied. Waipukurau: One whisky and soda may turn an incident into an accident. Waipawa: Banish beer and gain prosperity. Hastings: Quell the Quislings. Napier: Alcohol, the greatest of the health problems we have to face today. Napier "Y’s”: Re "Y’s” don’t alcoholise. Remits and resolutions passed. Rev. Douglas Smith, our speaker, urged us to be extremists in our cause. "Temperance, next to Christ, is the greatest gift (iod could bestow on mankind.” He was asked to take back to Assembly (in session at Hastings) a request that articles relating to liquor traffic and drink evil be published in the "Outlook” and read as a regular part of procedure at all meetings of Presbyterian women. Message from Mrs. Hiett received. Next Convention to be held at I )annevirke. Mrs. Lewis, District President, closed the session with, "Be not weary in well-doing.”
