DOMINION PRESIDENT VISITS TIMARU.

A combined meeting of all branch unions in South Canterbury was held in the Centennial Hall. Delegates and members were present from Ashburton, Tinwald, Temuka and Waimate. A paper on the aims and objects of the W.C.T.U was given by Mrs. Duckett (Waimate). Mrs. Hiett (Dominion President) gave an address dealing mainly with the preparation for a new order. Mrs. Hiett said that before a new order could he accomplished, there must be preparation of the heart and repentance. Proof of repentance was action. The drink traffic had assumed gigantic proportions and it was incomprehensible that mothers of men were not up against the evil. Members must redouble their efforts and a change of public opinion was necessary. The public did not yet realise that drink was a narcotic poison. The W.C.T.U. stood firm for the enforcement of the liquor laws. The active worker must have facts. Alcohol could produce mechanical energy—it it was proved that it reduced muscular and brain power. A moderate drinker would never believe that his work was impaired by drink, but scientists proved that this was so. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Hiett wacarried by acclamation. A programme of music was contributed by Mrs. A. Wheeler, Messrs. D. Mclnnis and J. W. Wood. Floral sprays were presented to Mrs. Hiett and all branch presidents.
