District Convention
TARANAKI.
The Taranaki District W.C.T.U. Convcntion met at New Plymouth, on Feb jth, 1942. .vs a prelude to Convention, a public meeting was lield on the evening of the 24th, when a line gathering of delegates, members and friends assembled at V\hiteley Hall. Mrs. Hartmann, District Presi.u. was in the chair, and was assisted m Miss Drew, New Plymouth President, who extended a welcome to the visitors. Greetings from the New Plymouth >ters’ Association were conveyed to the meeting by Rev. S. Jenkin. An interesting address on the work of W.C.T.U. was given by Mrs. Kasi>er, i.i*., District President of Auckland. “Our contribution to the war effort,” she said, “is to work with more determination than ever to abolish the evil of strong drink from our country.” She spoke of the progress of the movement, especially m America. Musical items were contributed by Mrs. Harrington, Mrs. Hawkins and Mrs. Avery and Miss Beth H addon. Morning devotions were conducted by Mrs. Hartmann. Greetings were received from Mrs. Peryman, and from the Auckland Union through Mrs. Kasper. Greetings were sent from Convention to Mrs. Peryman, Mrs. Hiett, Mrs. Lee t ow ie and the Auckland Union. A message of sympathy was sent to the relatives of the late Mrs. Jemison, a pioneer member and District Officer for many years. Rejiorts of work during the year were given by delegates from each Union, and >howed activity in many departments. An interesting account of the work being carried on by the Seatrfcn’s Rest committee was given by Miss Drew, and she gratefully acknowledged the assistance given by various Unions and friends. After noon-tide prayer members of Convention attended Communion Service in Whiteley Church. Revs. Ashworth and W illiamson officiating. Afternoon devotions were conducted by Mrs. Holly. The President, in her remarks, urged all to make the best use of the time while the (>oll is i>ost|K)ned. The election of officers resulted as follow s:— Pres., Mrs. Hartmann, Hawera; Giief Vice-Pres., Mrs. Hayward, Auroa; Cor. Sec., Mrs. McMillan, New Plymouth; ivcc. See., Mrs. K. Tarrant, Ngaire; Treas., Mrs. Simpson, Ngaire. A very interesting and helpful address was given by Mrs. Kasj>er, Supt. of the W orld’s W.C.T.U. Dept, of School of Methods. The speaker stressed the need of the Methods Dept, in all the other depti. of our W.C.T.U. There wai a large attendance at this afternoon session, and Mrs. Kasper’s address was much enjoyed. One new member was initiated at the close. Mrs. Hawkin sang two beautiful songs. N otes of thanks were passed to Mrs. Kasjier, Ministers, Hostesses and soloist, and all who had assisted a very happy and helpful Convention. Closed with the Doxology and Benediction.
