SLY-GROG SELLING.
We are pleased to sec that the public is being aroused to protest against the illicit sale of alcohol. The following par from a local paper tells of the protest from Waiapu Hospital Board supported by the County Council and forwarded to the Minister of Justice: Support for the Waiapu Hospital Board’s recent resolution regarding the evils of sly-grog selling, alleged to he prevalent in parts of the East Coast, was given by the Waiapu County Council at its latest meeting, when it was decided to forward a lett«*r to the Minister of Justice. Stricter measures were urged in dealing with offenders and the council also suggested that a limitation should he imposed upon the quantity of liquor that might he purchased wholesale by any private person convicted of slygrog selling or his agent, such a measure being calculated to reduce sales of liquor on a large scale revealed in recent prosecutions. The danger to health in the community was also stressed, the letter indicating that many Maori:, in the locality spent their earnings on liquor, leaving their women and children wanting, with the result that more sickness, under-nutrition and future trouble must eventuate.
