W.C.T.U. MAORI GIRLS' HOSTEL.
Dear hritnds, You will re member our appeal at Dominion Coi ference on behalf of the Maori Girls of Auckland, and that we were advised to let you know when we had launched our scheme, and we w'oidd receive your help. The need s here in Auckland even greater than before. So manv of the girls come in from the country districts looking for work, for the pakeha has taught them to seek something different from the life in a pad. They come also to be nearer their menfolk leaving for overseas with the Military Forces. They <annot earn sufficient to pay their way in a city when they first come to town, and temptation awaits their unwary feet, for they are so trusting. We have over £IOO in hand; our objective is £350. We have a mother, a retu ned missionary residing in the South Island, waiting to take charge for us if we don't keep her waiting too long. Will you help us? Donations seni o Miss Read, 4 Sanders Ave., Takaj una, will he gratefully received. Y nirs Sincerciv, MRS. F. W. MOUNTJOY. [Small oaks from little acorns sprung. Here is a chance to help a great cause. Many calls upon our purses, but if each White Ribboner sent 1/- it would provide over £2OO. Don’t despise the day of small contributions.—Editor.]
“Pine Spur,” Masterton, 26/9/41. (To The Editor.) Dear Madam, — I have just read in “The White Ribbon,” September 18, an interesting article on “ Reconstruction After This Awful War is Over.” May I suggest that before we even think of reconstruction we women of New Zealand make at least some effort to abolish the liquor traffic? It is well known, liquor in any form whatever is a stumbling block to any reform. So why waste time talking alxuit reconstruction until we have rid the country of this evil. It is simply a waste of valuable time. Yours, etc., LAURIE GROVES.
