WELLINGTON.
Upper Hutt, on 24th April, 1941. Fifteen members were given a warm welcome by the Upper Hutt Union. Mrs. Sired took the chair and led devotions, speaking on Nehemiah’s practice of kneeling in prayer before every decision had to be made. Letter writers and reporters were appointed. Correspondence was received from the Minister of Defence explaining the sending of 44,000 gallons of beer to the Middle East at the order of the A.N.A. Hoard. A fine report of the meetings of the N.C.W. during the quarter prepared by Mrs. Mcßride and was read by Miss Mildenhall. Noontide hymn and prayers for oik fellow-members throughout the world. Mrs. Brewer reported on the Convention resolutions. A resolution w*as passed: “That we, tlie Wellington District of the X.Z. Women’s Christian Temperance Union, endorse and support the action of the ministers in endeavouring to raise funds for National Patriotic work by direct giving, and recommend * to Unions that any gifts members desire to make be ‘direct gifts’ as a protest against gambling. 1 ' Afternoon devotions, Mrs. Reed. Greeting from Runanga L T nion. Greetings sent to Mrs. Hiett, Dominion President, and Mrs. Harrell, the newlvelected Dominion Vice-President. Mrs. Urael was elected District Supt. for Sabbath Observance. Mrs. Deans reported the formation of a Hand of Hope at Johnsonville, at the first meeting of which 22 signed the pledge; also the possibility of forming a Band of Hope at Tawa Flat and “Y” branches at Lower Hutt and Ngaio. It was asked that gifts for our work among seamen at the Rests at Timaru and New Plymouth should be brought to the District Executive meeting: to he held in the W.C.T.U. rooms, Constable Street, on the 14th August next. Vocal items by Mesdames Robinson, Moore and Withell. Miss Kirk addressed an open meeting on the recent Dominion
Convention, mentioning that our Temperance work is patriotic work in the highest degree. She touched on papers read at Convention; books to be studied by groups discussing plans for peace; the manner in which the gambling spirit is fostered; the petition to be circulated; the competition for delegates to next Convention; Temperance teaching in Sunday Schools; the Union’s Temperance Examinations; and the Moral and Social Hygiene Department, and concluded with the pithy question: “How many people have each one of us, since last meeting, asked to sign the pledge, join the W.C.T.U. or the Hand of Hope?” Solo by Mrs. Griffiths. One new member initiated. Afternoon *ea was served and the meeting closed. 1 TARANAKI. April 29th. Met at Hawera, Mr*. Hartmann in the chair. A very representative gathering. The prevalence of gambling lor patriotic funds was much deplored and its evil effects on the youth of the land were stressed. Mrs. Holly gave a devotional address. Hawera Union entertained at morniig tea and delegates went to local L T nijn meeting in the afternoon. AUCKLAND. May sth. Mrs. Kasper presided. Devotions, Mrs. Christopher. Eighteen Unions represented. Letters of sympathy to relatives of late Mrs. T. E. Taylor and Miss Siincock. Presentation to retiring secretary who is lea\ing the district. Arrangements for Day of Prayer on May 26th, and also afternoon to entertain some mothers of fighting force on Mother’s Day. President reported appointment of Women Police. Manifesto passed at Convention was read. Decided to take charge of “The Altar of Sacrifice” for the fighting forces’ appeal.
