The White Ribbon. "For God, and Home, and Humanity." WELLINGTON, OCTOBER 18. 1931. GENEROSITY.

The Government Finance Bill was not a very generous measure except in one direction, they felt the need of relieving the poor brewer of his terrible load of taxation. Civil Servants received a small portion justly due to them, and old ape pensioners are to pet part of the cut restored to them. The Belief worker with a family of four or more still receives 37/6 per week. But the poor brewer has had 3d a pal lon taken ofT the Excise duty on beer. On last year’s payments this means a pift to the brewers of £112,000. Happy brewers! Government’s pets! Rrewery shares increased at once by 1/-- and on the last issue that means thiit the Brewery shares in N.Z. are now worth £218,000 more than they were l>efore the Finance Bill was passed. We hope electors will remember this pift at the Ballot Box. Licensing Poll. The life of the present Parliament expires next year in November, and there may be a dissolution earlier in the year. Then we shall have to face up to a Poll. It will he eipht years since the last Poll and no one can predict

how the vote will po. Many educative forces have l»een at work the last eipht years; so don't listen to the pessimist who says, “We haven’t a chance to win. ’ We have every chance if we work, pray, and lielieve. Bible-ill-Schools. The Bill for Bible in Schools is not likely to liecome law this session. But we have l>een very interest'd to note the number of schools receivinp Bible instruction under the Nelson System. In the Wellinpton district 66 schools have the weekly Bible lesson, and the total number of children receivinp this instruction is 9,379 in the schools under the Wellinpton Board of Education; only two schools in Wellinpton City do not have Bible instruction. Perhaps other districts can pet the statistics for their district and forward to us.
