WILLARD HOME.

i;k;hth annual report, junk, 1 !>27. to JUNE, 1028. .\rcoii»iiHMtoli<Hi. —The past >eai lias been one of groat activity, in so far as the extension scheme is concerned. Many meetings were held to discuss plans. &c„ and from September —when the money was received from the Wanganui Education Hoard lor the purchase of four acres of our land — we were then able to proceed with our aim and object. In November the work w’as commenced, and to-day tin- new Home is an established fact. The <*ost of the Building complete was 12.2 85. and the Outbuilding, £4O, and to the Contractor. Mr N. W. McLean, we tender our best thanks for faithful work done. To the Supervisors, Messrs. Wright and Taylor, we also give thanks for time spent and help whenever called upon. The year that is passed is one from which should originate a great forward movement, as we are now able to cater for the small infant, having a well-equipped Department under the Plunket system. Our new Wing was opened by His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. J. Graham) on May 2 4th, absolutely free of debt, which the management is very proud of. We are hoping that » School will be erected in the very near future on the land adjoining the Home, which will be of great benefit to our children. Finance.—ln July last, a bequest of £B3 16s. sd. was received from the Trustees of the late W. Hart, of Foxton, and in October, a donation of £SO from the Beneficiaries of th«* late C. E. White, Palmerston North. Last month, £SOC was received -per

Mr A. E. Pen nett —from the T. E. Smith Estate. Auckland, for which we were very grateful. We have had to mcintain over a long period a large number of children, without i< - ceiving anything towards their support. This has been a tax upon the Board's resources. The Committee, next year, will have to consider seriously ways and means to build up the finances, in order to keep the running expenses going, as these will he greatly on the Increase. To those subscribers who have continued their support, we tender grateful thanks; also to the Commercial Travellers and Miss McKenzie Forbes for monetary assistance, to the Organisers of the Street Stall, and the local Branches of the W.C.T.U. for their effort. Our expenditure is somewhat larger, owing to the fact that the staff and inmates had to be housed during building operations, but we were very fortunate in being able to get the beach residence for an extended period, which greatly lessened our anxiety, the children being there for eleven weeks. Again 1 ha\9 to thank the W.C.T.U. branches throughout the Dominion for their loyalty to us and extended support. They are a source of great help, and it is owing to them, in a great measure, that the Home is so well stocked with clothing. Their contributions in money, reached well over £230. and this \ consider a great achievement. To Mesdames Barnett, Collins, Tbirtle and McDonald, Sewing Room Organisers, together with their willing helpers,-we again tender thanks fcm splendid service in providing

clothes and conducting Jumble Sales. Donations have been received from the Borough Council, Premier Drapery Co., C. M. Boss Co., Collinson and Cunningham, Millar and Giorgi, Waldegrave Estate, Newbury School pupils, and many private individuals, who have helped to lighten the burden. A few changes have taken place during the year, with regard to inmates. Four children have been discharged and seven admitted. Three of the children had been in residence almost from the* inception of the Home, but now have gone back to parents and guardians. Five of the* admissions were temporary eases, while the mothers were laid by in hospital. At present the number in Institution remains at nineteen, with more applications to be considered. The health of the children on the average has been fairly good, with the exception of an outbreak of measles, and thrve rases of scarlet fever. These are all convalescent. We w\*re again fortunate in securing two good relieving matrons while the staff were on annual leave. I have again to record that the Board is fortunate in having sucl a careful staff in charge of ihe Home, much care and anxiety being relieved us thereby. Gifts of food, meat, vegetables, fruit, milk, toys, bookH and clothing have been received, and for these we haw to thank the Manawatu Meat Co., Mr Thwaites. W. Owtram, G. H. Bennett and Co., C. Swallow. Mesdames Minns. Heath. Firkin and Jenkins; Messrs. Boniface, .1 Ellis. H. \S bite head. Princess Bakery, A. Butzbarh,

Regal Cake Shop, Dustins, at;d the public generally, and our warmest thanks are due to the local Press for publishing the list each month.', We again take the opportunity cf tendering grateful thanks to Dr. Harnett for his continued care ol' the children’s health, also to Dr. Hooper and Mr Tennant for fret 1 dental service. To Mrs Blair Tennant we are indebted for assistance in placing our girls into the Girl Guides' movement. To the Orient Lodge, Scottish Society, for entertainments, to the Rotary Club for pleasant outing, tea and presents, to the Citizens’ Luncheon Club. Congregational Sunday School, Cuba Street Bible Class, and a kind friend for Christmas teas and treats, to the very numerous friends and Loyal Temperance Legions, who provided funds for Christmas Cheer, to the New Zealand Importing Coy. for spades and buckets for the •beach, and to the friends who motored the children to and from the Railway Station en mute to Plimnierton Beach. The Board tenders grateful thanks to Mr H. H. Oram for legal assistance, to Mr C. F. Spooner, Custodian of Documents, to Miss Bryce for keeping the ledgers, and to Mr H. F. Wilson for auditing. Especially, do we thank the numerous friends who have assisted in any way, and rendered service, the schools and individual friends who responded so well to our annual appeal for eggs for preserving. To Harvest Festivals, Church Socials. Ladies' Guilds, and Agricultural and Pastoral Association for beautiful produce sent in. This not only adds variety to the children's diet, but Is eloquent of the kind thoughts of friends who think of our children, and also saves the funds of the Home to the extent of many pounds. In conclusion, I again solicit the support and help that has been accorded us in the past, and trust that the coming year may be one of pros|M‘rity and much blessing. E. BIRDS ALL, Hon. Secretary-Treasurer. ItalttHfe-Hlifft for War Kittled >l»>. IICJK.
